Duluth, Minnesota, birthplace of my parents and mother in law is one of the largest venues of immigrants who came to this country from Norway and Sweden in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Along with the memories of their country of origin, these immigrants brought with them their Scandinavian traditions.

As the family genealogist who has done much work by my mother's family, I just have to go back three generations before finding family information requires the use of Scandinavian birth, marriage and death certificates. Needless to say, I managed to read the records very well! Through my research and hunting for my older relatives and asking tons of questions, I have learned many stories about my ancestors Sweden and Norway and the traditions they cherish.

These traditions passed down from great grandparents to great-grandmother and grandfather's mom and dad, and now even today, where we teach our children in hopes of see the importance of preserving their heritage. My mother-in-law is only one and a half years away from turning ninety years old. When she passes, she will have with it the memories and stories that were not able to muster. There is no greater reason why we need to record the stories of now, before it is too late.

We do not know how long we have, but we are fortunate that she has a quick mind and a good memory. She has taught us the importance of following the traditions of our family as a liaison with them and others. Christmas is a time when many of these traditions are manifested in the food we eat, cookies and desserts to bake, The parties who have, and even the ways we open Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve and the next morning. Christmas will certainly not be the same without Lutefisk, Lefse, porridge rice, bread Christmas rullepølse, herring, and pickled pig's feet. The grandmother has been there every step of the way, ensuring that all preparations Buffet is done properly, or else!

Each year, look forward to the events that take place during the Christmas season. Make sure make a record of family traditions and stories of their loved ones before it is too late. Give the gift of a legacy to their children and grandchildren. You can now appreciate, but one day I will!
