When I was young I used to be a joke (in a good way) in many families, that one could ensure that the grandmothers would think that socks and scarves were the ideal Christmas gift for your children and grandchildren.
Disappointing for young people if their grandparents were practical gifts more than imaginative, but it was so easy for the older generation to keep in touch with what the younger generation, as now, nor had as much disposable income - not in my family anyway.
Now that I am a grandma having fun searching for the perfect Christmas and birthday gifts for my children and grandchildren that does not mean scarves and socks!
